Stories of Jesus: The Disciples: Andrew

Characters: Props:

Robbie: Hi, I'm Robbie. When Jesus was about 30 years old, He began teaching the people about God and about how they could be saved. He also went from place to place healing the sick, raising the dead and performing miracles that only God could do! It would have been great to travel with Him. In fact, I want to take you with me back into time through the power of our imaginations to meet the men who walked with Jesus and saw Him teach. These men were called the 12 Disciples. Let's go!

(Funny sound is heard to indicate traveling in time. Andrew appears.)

Andrew: Hi, young man! Who are you?

Robbie: My name is Robbie. I am from the future and came back to talk to people who met Jesus and walked with Him in person!

Andrew: You've come to the right place then. I just happen to be one of his disciples. My name is Andrew.

Robbie: Andrew! You're Peter's brother, right?

Andrew: (Sighs.) Yes, that's right.

Robbie: What's the matter.

Andrew: You have no idea what it is like to be his brother. Everybody knows all about Peter. Don't get me wrong, I love him and all, he's a great guy and a great brother, it's just that everytime little kids come from the future and I tell them who I am, they always ask me about my brother, Peter.

Robbie: Well, gee. Sorry about that. Why don't you tell us about yourself then. We'd like to get to know Andrew wouldn't we, kids?

Andrew: Well, how nice! Let's see. What would you like to know?

Robbie: Well, first of all how did you meet Jesus?

Andrew: Well, my brother and I were fisherman. We spent our days out on the sea catching as many fish as possible. One day we were sitting in the boat when along came Jesus. He said "You fishermen, follow me and I will teach you how to catch people!" We got up and followed Him right away!

Robbie: Wow. You trusted Him just like that?

Andrew: That's right, Robbie. But I had already heard about Jesus from someone else whom I trusted. His name was John the Baptist. John told us that one was coming who was great! This man would be the Son of God. I used to follow John, but when Jesus came and John told us that Jesus was the one he talked about, I ran to tell my brother Simon Peter. "We've found the Messiah!" I told him.

Robbie: Messiah? What's the Messiah?

Andrew: Not what but who. All through the Old Testament, the Bible talks about a king who will someday appear to save the people from their Sin. I knew when I heard about Him that Jesus must be the Messiah!

Robbie: Wow! That's cool! So what did your brother say about this?

Andrew: He was excited but not quite sure what to think until he actually met Jesus. Then Jesus gave him a new name. He told my brother "Your name is Simon, But I shall call you Peter because Peter means "Rock" and you will be the rock-solid foundation of my church. My brother, Simon Peter followed Jesus after that.

Robbie: Hmmm... Did He give you a new name too?

Andrew: No. He kept my name as it was. Andrew means "Brave."

Robbie: Wow. I wonder what "Robbie" means. Oh, well. So what kinds of things did you see Jesus do? Where can we read about you in our Bibles?

Andrew: Well, there is one story that many people have heard about in which I was right there when it all happened. You can read about it in John Chapter 6. Maybe someone has it here?

Robbie: I do, it says

"5Jesus soon saw a great crowd of people climbing the hill, looking for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, "Philip, where can we buy bread to feed all these people?" 6He was testing Philip, for he already knew what he was going to do. 7Philip replied, "It would take a small fortune[1] to feed them!" 8Then Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up. 9"There's a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish. But what good is that with this huge crowd?"

Wow! What happened then?

Andrew: Let me read the rest.

10"Tell everyone to sit down," Jesus ordered. So all of them--the men alone numbered five thousand--sat down on the grassy slopes. 11Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and passed them out to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate until they were full. 12"Now gather the leftovers," Jesus told his disciples, "so that nothing is wasted." 13There were only five barley loaves to start with, but twelve baskets were filled with the pieces of bread the people did not eat!

Robbie: Wow! 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish were enough to feed 5000 men plus women and children?!

Andrew: And have plenty left over. It was amazing, Robbie. Simply amazing! It was almost as amazing as when Jesus ascended into Heaven 40 days after He rose again on Easter Sunday!

Robbie: Wow. So what did you do after Jesus went back to Heaven?

Andrew: I stayed with the other disciples for a while but then I went out to teach others about Jesus.

Robbie: You are a missionary?

Andrew: Yes. But remember Robbie, Jesus wants all of us to tell others about Him. We should all be His missionaries!

Robbie: That's a good point Andrew. Well, it was nice talking to you! Maybe we will see you again sometime?

Andrew: That would be nice. Take care kids! Goodbye, Robbie! (Exits.)

Robbie: Well, I guess we got to know a lot more about Andrew today than just who his famous brother was. Let's do this again soon and meet another of Jesus' disciples! See you next time!

The end!
